Iranian missile debris hits Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Israel says on X
Fragments from an Iranian ballistic missile landed on several holy sites in Jerusalem's Old City on Monday, according to Israel's official account on X.
The post included a photo showing damage to a rooftop near the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and stated that debris fell on the church, the Armenian Patriarchate, the Jewish Quarter, and the Temple Mount near the Al Aqsa Mosque.
What Israel says happened
According to Israeli police, the fragments came from Iranian ballistic missiles that were intercepted by Israel's air defense systems during Monday's attacks. Officers reportedly recovered large pieces of missile debris from several locations across the Old City.
Photos distributed by police showed three officers carrying what appeared to be a large metal ring shaped component off a red tiled roof adjacent to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Additional fragments were found near the National Library of Israel, close to the Knesset, according to Israel's fire and rescue service (via Reuters)
Israel's official X account stated: "The Iranian regime is firing missiles toward Jerusalem's holy sites, endangering Jews, Muslims, and Christians alike." The post added that "Israel, meanwhile, acts to protect worshippers of all faiths in its capital city."
Casualties and damage
According to Israeli authorities, no casualties or major structural damage were reported at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre or the Temple Mount compound. One person reportedly suffered a minor burn after touching a hot missile fragment.
Authorities urged the public not to approach any debris and to alert emergency services if they discover fragments.
